Symptom co-occurrence and organ system were the most commonly used subtypes used in categorization. Children and young people have higher risks of rare vascular and inflammatory diseases up to 12 months after a first COVID-19 diagnosis and higher risk of rare myocarditis or pericarditis up to 4 weeks after a first BNT162b2 vaccine, although the risk following vaccination is substantially lower than the risk following infection. These findings are of great importance for national policy makers and caregivers considering vaccination consent for children, and support the public health strategy of COVID-19 vaccination in children and young people to mitigate the more frequent and persistent risks associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Researchers analyzed 2022 data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys completed by 108,237 COVID-19 survivors who did or didn't have persistent symptoms. Participants' health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed via SRGH, self-reported mental and physical health, and efficiency in completing activities of daily life.

Of all participants, 35% were aged 18 to 34 years, 46.5% were men, and 22.7% had long COVID, also known as post-COVID condition (PCC), defined as having lingering symptoms at least 3 months post-infection.

Researchers found that those with SARS-CoV-2 infections had a 63% increased risk of developing one or more cardiovascular conditions—including arrhythmias, heart inflammation, chest pain, palpitations, and hypertension—compared to those with negative tests and no documented history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These risks were elevated regardless of whether the patient had a congenital heart defect (CHD).

Young patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests had a 17 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease tested at stage 2 or higher, indicating mild kidney damage that still functioned well, and 35 percent higher risk of chronic kidney disease at stage 3 or higher, meaning there is mild to severe damage impacting kidney function, from one month to two years after infection.

Patients who had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test—compared to those with a negative test—had a 25 percent increased risk of developing at least one gastrointestinal symptom or disorder in the post-acute phase, and a 28 percent increased risk in the “chronic phase” from six months to two years after the SARS-CoV-2 test.

An analysis of over 68,000 valid responses found that common long COVID symptoms include fatigue, memory decline, reduced exercise ability, and brain fog, with lower rates among individuals infected only once. Women were more prone to long COVID, and symptoms varied by age, except for sleep issues and muscle or joint pain, which were more frequent in older adults. Northern China showed higher prevalence, possibly due to colder temperatures. Risk factors included pre-existing conditions, alcohol use, smoking, and severe acute infection. While reinfection generally caused milder acute symptoms, it increased the likelihood and severity of long COVID. Vaccination, especially with multiple boosters, significantly reduced long-term symptoms. Additionally, COVID-19 patients reported more bacterial, flu, and mycoplasma infections, and 8–10% believed they developed chronic diseases due to the virus.

"The closure of long-COVID clinics in recent years has affected patients who need care. I talked with people who, like me, have been living with long COVID later in the pandemic. Ryan Parker lives in Portland, Oregon; is a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe; and used to work in philanthropy. Like many people with long COVID, Parker tried to work through his illness. He told me he returned from one work trip so sick that he couldn’t get out of bed for a month. Last fall, the long-COVID clinic that was treating him closed. Because of the disease, Maeve Sherry has been disabled and unable to work for three years. They found a long-COVID clinic in Great Falls, Montana, three hours from where they lived at the time, but it closed in December of 2023, they said. There are now no long-COVID clinics in Montana. When Myisha Hill was still struggling to do household chores, take care of her kids, and even talk weeks after a COVID infection, she looked up the long-COVID clinic near where she lives in Las Vegas, she told me. But it, too, had closed. There are now no long-COVID clinics in Nevada."
